Pushing Through Fall Quarter

This summer I got far away from painting.  When the quarter began I was excited to get back into it.  I experienced a lot of frustration with both concepts and technique.  I was so concerned with having sound concepts that I hesitated to experiment.  This quarter I have learned the value of practice, to let go of my own judgment and just PAINT.  It was very inspiring to see the work of my peers week six.  The amount of growth and effort was astounding.  I appreciate having the chance to be in class with all of you and seeing how you work.  It was very beneficial.  My last piece, my self portrait in progress (but almost done), is an indication of the direction I would like to go in, allowing the paint to have a greater significance, becoming part of the content, instead of being secondary to it.

  1. I really love the distorted self portrait you did earlier in the quarter and I am glad you included it in the post above!!! the marks in the drawing are descriptive and somewhat elusive in that they are simple but reveal a huge amount of information and I can tell you very accurately understand the figure! besides the unique perspective of the reflection in some kind of mirror or shiny surface, the expression and gesture of the form is very emotional, full of attitude. very you!!

  2. I also really would love to hear more about your process of making watercolors, you use washes in a unique dimensional way that is something I have struggled with, I tend to rely on fast methods using color islands, happy accidents(haha),reductive methods, etc etc

  3. The last sel-portrait seems to show an understanding and application of many of the experiments, especially the abstract ones, you did during the quarter. Great progress!
